Recently, an increasing number of organizations have been focusing on family-friendly travel, making sure there’s fun for every generation.
While you may have some lingering concerns about travel since 2020, many families have found these experiences are an excellent remedy to the lasting impacts on their children. In the U.S. Family Travel Survey — conducted by the Family Travel Association, Edinburgh Napier University, and NYU — 88% of parents said that travel is helpful to their children in overcoming the anxiety and isolation brought on by the pandemic.
For instance, 84% of respondents said it makes their children more adaptable and open to new experiences. 61% say it helps them with their social skills, as well. Other benefits include: family travel makes children less isolated (58%), it encourages them to try new foods (48%), and it makes them more comfortable around strangers (44%).
If you’re ready to start planning your first family trip, we have some tips:
- Get your kids involved in the planning process! They’ll feel more invested and be more engaged if they can have a say in some of your activities, or at the very least are aware of your plans before heading out. Build excitement in advance of the trip!
- Find a travel advisor that specializes in family travel, or even better, is a certified family travel specialist. The Family Travel Association has more than 250 certified travel advisors, all of whom have years of experience and expertise to make your planning as easy and effective as possible.
- Similarly, seek out accommodations that proudly let you know they’re family-friendly. For instance, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are two cruise lines with a focus on families, offering programs and spaces specifically for kids and teens, overseen by counselors who take the burden off parents to entertain.
- For your destination, don’t be scared about doing something a little more exotic, like Ecuador, Costa Rica, or Peru. They’re home to incredible, passionate travel professionals who can provide an amazing and unique learning experience for kids.
- When picking an airline, consider finding one that makes it easy for the whole family to sit together. Certain airlines offer fee-free family seating, such as American Airlines and Frontier Airlines.
- You can foster a sense of independence by giving kids their own backpacks or suitcases. This way, they can keep their favorite games and toys with them at all times, and it will make them feel more included as a fellow traveler, rather than just along for the ride.
- Consider bringing the parents along as well! Multi-generational travel can enhance the experience by offering a broad range of perspectives while also allowing for even more special family memories.
- Think about how you can work educational experiences into the trip, including interactive museums, guided tours, and historical landmarks.
- Come prepared for everything the little ones may need! You’ll want snacks, water, and a first-aid kit on hand at all times.
Planning a trip may seem daunting if it’s your first time, but with family-focused partners on board, you can easily have an amazing experience full of life-changing moments and lifelong memories.
